whatta treat...

Let’s talk about something new today…something delicious-oh!
Whoopsie!!! I’ve been longing to eat this yummy local delicacy for quite a long time already and the “crave” came to an end last night, after my tiring work, whoa! Right after I got off from jeepney, I saw an old lady holding a rattan basket covered with white thick cloth (Alright, if you’re a true-blooded pinoy, you might already have guessed what I trying to say here). After seeing that lady, thoughts of the past came in. The delicacy bracketed with my happy childhood experiences; after a stroll at the park, my sister would usually buy this before going home and sumptuous pigging out would over and done with at home. I also dwell upon this delicacy during the midnight summer talks at the foyer with my cousins. Whenever we hear this reverberating call of the vendor, it would only mean one thing, close to midnight and time to close up.
The ahoy – Balooooot…baloooot…balooot in a squeaky tone, falsete el voz!

Yep, buddies I am talking about BALUT, a fertilized duck (or chicken) egg with a nearly-developed embryo inside that is boiled and eaten in the shell. It was few years ago when my palate had a taste of it and it is coupled with my down memory lane of tender age. Anyhoo, here’s what happened. I walked past the balut vendor though I really had the urge to buy and it took me two blocks away to turn over and retrace steps. “Manang yun maliit lang yun sisiw ha” and then I paid 15 pesos. I was sniggering walking home with the warm balut on my hand. “Yipee, I’ll be able to taste you again”. I was really excited to wolf down the balut - to devour the sabaw (amniotic fluid) and have a taste for once again the protein-rich egg yolk. I never thought of eating the sisiw (embryo) because I always imagined the beak and claws scratching my throat and of course the queer feeling of the downy feather.

And then, when I cracked up the shell (I was in suspense to gulp up the sabaw), I saw teenie-weenie blood vessels and some sort of coagulated blood, “gulp, gulp”. But I continued (still got the nerve to open it up), and then I saw the horrible embryo inside and KABLAM, it just grossed me out. The scene on my nursing bio-lab flashed in, the horror sight of the fetuses floating inside the glass canisters. Sheesh, I had the feeling of throwing up and it made me wonder on how did I able to rejoice in with this chiller when I was as still a kid.

Haiz! It’s really ExOtIc!
Urgghs! It's NO, no no!

Hmmm…How about one-day old chick? I’ll give it a try next time.

Love 'em: my tea obsession

It’s six o’clock in the morning and the city’s starting to get busy but at my pad I could still feel the serene chilly breeze of the granite floor. I used to drink coffee to get on my way and to set my nerves for the demanding sunlight hours but then I just had a change of heart, just lately when I discovered the calming effect and the tannic waking up sensation of tea at one fell swoop. I already made a post about tea and I talked about my first palate tea experience and how I became so into it. The effect is really systemic, catching, and intense craving. From a frappacapadoodah obsession to a “cup-of-tea” habit, a beautiful twist of darling. So I may say that tea has been a part of my life. My friend from UK firstly thought that I came from England because of my “cup-of-tea” habit – lmao, just hope so. My pal from Dubai made the same mistake of “I thought you were from place” on our fist time encounter because even the Middle East local tea brand is well-known to me. Well, I guess I just love nipping the variety of teas. My palate and other senses have evolved from a plain tea drinker to a more sensitive and positive reception in tea drinking. Though I know that the flavors that came in contact with my sensation were just a fractional unit of the diverse tea flavor infusions, I still feel lucky for taking part in the bliss of tea life. The wide-ranging tea relish; from the products of Chinese with their historical oolong up to the healthful infusion of Korean ginseng, from the golden tea of Ceylon up to the radea of Arabia, from the brands of Lipton, Twinings up to East Indian and Steep, from flower to fruits infusions, and from tannic to serene aromatic tea upshot. Every sip is a unique experience because tea has a lot of surprises and distinctive types of satisfaction to offer. And here are my three newest tea brands: Steuarts, Golden Leaf, and Lyons. Steuarts Ceylon tea will never fail you to witness the original “golden tea”; it’s really heaven to look at and of course to go through with your senses. The Golden Leaf Mint Tea is without equal to other mint and peppermint infusions, it lingers all the way through your throat and appetite. And the Lyons English Breakfast tea has the unique simplicity that in certainly you’ll ask for more.

treat

December One, the first day of jingle bells Christmas month. Okay, for today lets talk about something light, something interesting both for kiddoes and for adults who are not sexually active.
Tadah, the magical treats of

Chocolates

Oh gee, I’m a certified chocoholic, an addiction –“Once you consume chocolate, chocolate will consume you”. And sometimes chocolate is better than sex. Dr. Ruth Westheimer says that “the taste of chocolate is a sensual pleasure in itself, existing in the same world as sex... For myself, I can enjoy the wicked pleasure of chocolate... entirely by myself. Furtiveness makes it better”

So before we talk about the interesting tidbits about Choc-ohh-late, lets review these facts:
First and foremost, you gotta know that

Chocolate is a Vegetable

, believe or not,

LOL

Where does chocolate come from? Actually, it DOES grow on trees. It all starts with a small tropical tree, the Theobroma cacao, usually called simply, "cacao." (Pronounced ka-KOW. Theobroma is Greek for "food of the gods.")
What are the health benefits of chocolates? Many, many!!! According to Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, if one swallows a cup of chocolate only three hours after a copious lunch, everything will be perfectly digested and there will still be room for dinner. It’s

good for digestion

Some says that a nice box of chocolates can provide your total daily intake of calories in one place. Now, isn't that handy? So it’s an

instant energy supplier

Chocolate causes certain endocrine glands to secrete hormones that affect your feelings and behavior by making you happy. Therefore, it counteracts depression, in turn reducing the stress of depression. Your stress-free life helps you maintain a youthful disposition, both physically and mentally. Meaning to say, Chocolate is an

Anti-depressant

Here’s one great news that I’ve learned about chocolate, way back high school, the mighty power of chocolates - Scientists have proven that dark chocolate has the same type of

flavonoids

that

antioxidant

rich foods such as green tea, red fruits and vegetables, and red wine do. High blood levels of flavonoids contribute to good cardiovascular health and may lower the risk of heart disease and certain cancers. Nutritionists are quick to point out, though, that the antioxidant benefits of a bar of chocolate can be achieved with far fewer calories by having steamed vegetables or a cup of green tea instead. See? But later on, I’ve read that proteins deactivate/alter the function of flavonoids as antioxidant, so it’s recommended to eat

BLACK Chocolate

Got it buddies? Weeeeeeeeee…..

Before I say goodbye, lemme tell you this gossip, Did you hear about the affair between Mr. Goodbar and Peppermint Patty? They had a baby, Ruth.

And with the reliable statistics:
“A new British survey has revealed that 9 out of 10 people like Chocolate. The tenth lies.”

And with this inspiring quote:
Strength is the capacity to break a chocolate bar into four pieces with your bare hands - and then eat just one of the pieces

Oppsie, before you indulge yourself with bon bon, drop a gift for me amigo!!!

STEEL WOOL and GROSS chunks @ GRILLA BAR and Restuarant

Stomach-turning experience at Grilla Bar and Restaurant, Greenhills Promenade

STEEL WOOL...

GROSS CHUNKS...

I had a dinner with my sister, bro-in-law, and my 5-year old niece at Grilla Bar and Restaurant, Greenhills Promenade Branch last Wednesday night. We made an order of seafood meal, baby back ribs, and a follow up order of kare-kare. In fairness to the resto, we were amused savoring their tasty food. But at the middle of our meal, my bro-in-law found a piece of “STEEL WOOL” on his mouth after munching a mouthful serving of kare-kare. My sister got really upset because what if my niece got swallowed it. We immediately called the attention of the manager. Both sides were calm about the issue and Ms, Leano, the manager said, “gusto niyo ma’mam palitan na lang?” Consensus was made by her suggestion. But it took quite a long time before the food was served so my sister had decided to just cut it to our orders but Ms. Leano didn’t agree and suggested to just take out the food instead. Again, we agreed and waited for the food. When we got home, we found out “BIG CHUNKS OF FATS” (or whatsoever gross thing you may call it) on the meal. We were stupefied looking at it because it’s really gross and completely different in contrast to the first serving we had. It has no more steel wool but the GROSS CHUNKS of “eww” instead. Without delay, I searched the net for their number and my sister dialed it up and talked to the manager once again, but this time my sister was logically furious.

The “STEEL WOOL” issue was already a BIG mistake for them. On some resto, they would replace it with their most expensive meal and on some would double their serving. We were already annoyed and disgusted about the “STEEL WOOL” but then they made another foolish act by treating us like brainless customers. I really don’t know what’s with Grilla, they’re supposed to augment their first fault but then it turned out into another disgusting mistake, deliberate mistake – I presumed.

Grilla Bar and Restaurant, Greenhills Promenade Branch is now BLACKLISTED.

tea

According to an old Chinese saying, it takes more than one’s lifespan to be able to taste all the flavors of tea in China, I must agree to this.

PhotobucketTea gives a different attitude when it touches my palette and the aroma is undeniably refreshing. It has a different aura compare to my cup of frappadoohdahs. Coffee as my first loved drink is one of the powerful olfactory stimuli since childhood. It gives a strong spur during the midnight study hours, 5-8 cups to keep me alive. In contrast, Tea is pretty new to me. I had a full recognition of tea just a few years ago after tasting a natural oolong. It was followed by jasmine, chamomile, and forest fruits black tea flavors. When my supply had gone out, I went back to coffee. But just last week, a friend of mine has been giving me different kinds of tea - the black, green and oolong at variety of flavors. I started with raspberry and blackcurrant black tea and then some green teas. I also had a taste of peach tea and my new favorite flavor, peppermint tea. Because of the freshness on it, I tried some exotic flavors, like the Korean Ginseng tea and the Japanese Original Green tea. And my palette got aroused too with the Venetian Tea. Tea has the antioxidants, the refreshing taste, and the natural stimulating scent. So if it's a chioce between coffee and tea, gotta choose both.

Tips:
-as much as possible use porcelain cups for it retains heat compare to other glasswares
-use distilled water because the minerals on water may affect the taste of the tea
-use fresh hot water
-let the tea steep for about 3 minutes and then begin enjoying a cup of enchantment. Do not remove the leaves from the cup. Once the water level is low - add more water, and so on and so on - until the flavor of the tea is exhausted.

Coffee Aroma

Coffee

and

Chocolate

Are you feeling sluggish around the office? Take a whiff or two of scents derived from products you already rely on to get you through the day: Coffee and Chocolate. The scents of coffee and chocolate have a significant effect on enhancing cognition and clerical office work.

The research summary: Thirty participants were asked to complete a variety of tasks associated with clerical office work. One of the tasks was the completion of a series of cognitive problems measuring visual memory, verbal memory, reaction time, and impulsivity. Participants were also subjected to a typing task, where they were asked to reproduce as quickly as possible, but also as accurately as possible, a short story.

The mock office workers visited the laboratory three times, each time performing the tasks under a different scent condition. These conditions consisted of the presentation of coffee scent or chocolate scent (administered through low flow oxygen via a nasal cannula), and a control condition where only un-scented oxygen was presented.
Upon completion of the clerical tasks, several additional assessments were made, such as the participants’ mood, self-rated measures of workload, and ratings of alertness and fatigue.

Statistical analyses were conducted by controlling the covariates of frequency of coffee and chocolate consumption, preference for coffee and chocolate smells, and preference for coffee and chocolate taste. Typing accuracy was greater when coffee scent was used, as was a significant increase in typing speed words per minute. When chocolate scent was administered, there was a significant increase in visual motor speed information processing and an increase in impulse control. An increase in visual motor speed means you can process visual information more quickly, and thus respond to information more quickly, so you can get your office tasks completed faster. An increase in impulse control also implies that you are less likely to make a mistake on your tasks. It’s a win-win!

So if you want to keep on track with your word processing tasks, keep that cup of coffee next to your computer so you can benefit from the aroma. Or if you need an extra cognitive boost for your Sudoku puzzle, an open box of aromatic chocolates may do the trick.

Thank you .....

TAHO

Life at the province is really different from the city; the fresh air, the beautiful panoramic scenes, and the food. Yes, the food, one very delicious food that I associate to my early childhood and province life is taho. Taho is made from tokwa (tofu), brown sugar syrup, and sago (tapioca). It is sold in plastic cups by mangtataho (the taho vendor) usually in early mornings. The taste is sweet and the texture is soft and it has sago (tapioca) that makes it interesting to eat. It's really yummy. Yesterday i had a chance to gorge this yummy snack food in a crispy fresh early morning. Instead of pigging it out in the plastic cup, i used my own glass(for it is larger than the plastic cups, lol).

Here's the picture of taho, my taho!

Bumming around

Ever heard of HK noodles?
How about Nomimono Kokonattsu series?
Never? Here it is guys, my "bumming around" at Robinson Ortigas.

Going out is never complete without binging into a variety of food. But for a bum on walk, it is quite different, quite difficult. Budget is the major determinant of choosing the right food; your palate's choice is just secondary. After browsing some books at National Bookstore, I started surveying the fast foods at the food court that offer good food at very reasonable price. PhotobucketThe first thing that I noticed was the queue on a small food stall, it's HK noodles. “HK (stands for Hong Kong) style noodles” provides a real fast food at a very practical value. At 26 pesos, you can already have a beef or pork noodles. The serving is composed of oriental noodles and toge(mongo srpout), cooked lightly that gives the crunchy texture. One exciting scheme of HK noodles is their assortment of sauces that will definitely suit to the diverse customer choices. Some of these sauces are teriyaki, oyster, soy, garlic, chili and other oriental seasonings. The way of serving, which is in a disposable cups plus a chopstick, is suited for those who are in a hurry and broke. I had a beef noodle with teriyaki sauce and chili. Sumptuous!
For the drinks,Photobucket I spotted an appealing fruit juice stall at the 3rd level of the mall called Nomimono (refreshment). It has variety of fruit juices served in different ways - aloe, kokonattsu, fusion. The name of the store is quite hard to pronounce as well as the names of their juices; it's because of the store's origin - Japan. Honeydew is their bestseller but I chose mango-lychee fusion. It's a 3-layer fruit shake with aloe and fruit pulps: the bottom part has the sweetest syrupy taste and the softest texture- the aloe, the second layer has the natural flavor of lychee and fiber texture –the pulp, and the top most layers has chunks of mango and pieces of lychee. It’s really refreshing. Til’ next time guys, gtg.

The DATE

It’s late in the afternoon
She’s wondering what clothes to wear
She puts on her lipstick, powder on her face
And brushes her short black-burgundy hair
And then she asks me
Do I look alright
And I say yes, you look wonderful tonight

She was wearing Capri pants, sleeveless blouse, and a clean pair of white sandals. She looked pretty – as always, though the layers of fats (specifically three layers) on her tummy were visible on her clothes. She’s fat but I always tell her that she’s just chubby - I love her in that figure. She has freckles on her face, around her cheekbones. And there’s a burgundy hair growing on top of her black short hair, a style maybe, I guess. She’s generally beautiful.
I asked for her hand and she gladly handled it over me. We walked along the streets on HHWWPSSP mode (holding hands while walking – pa swing-swing pa). We both wanted to have a perfect date, so our first course was no other than a church, Baclaran Church – the dating place for couples wanting a divine providence. We prayed silently, side by side, asking for blessing in life and giving gratitude for the moment we had. With spirits flying on the sky, we went to Mall of Asia (MOA), and still on HHWWPSSP mode. I asked her which cuisine she would want to have. She just said, “Anything, It’s your plan and the decision is all yours”. We had a long walk, searching for a good place to eat at. My choice was an affordable Italian food of Chef de Angelo but when we got there, only after looking at the mall’s directory, the place was jam packed. I was hungry then and I knew she was, too, she wasn’t just complaining. Because of our hungry tummies that couldn’t wait any longer, I took her to Kenny. I chose healthy plate for her and crispy chicken for me. We had a great meal, not because of the food but because of the moment we had together. After binging out, I took her to bay walk wherein we strolled in an HHWWPSSP mode again. The place was romantic with loving orange rays of the sun stretching under the horizon. We sat on a bench near the fountain while enjoying our fruit juices. We talked about everything but I didn’t open up my feelings for her. I just thought that my action had spoken for me. After the long chat, we went home, still on HHWWPSSP mode with aching gastrocnemius muscles. I asked her if she enjoyed the night and she smiled at me and said, “I love it, wonderful night”. When we got home, she fell on the bed easily. And while she was sleeping, I gave her my goodnight sleep. That was a day for both of us, a memorable date.

She is beautiful in and out. She is the most beautiful girl in my life, the most important girl in my life. She is no other than my nanay, my mum.

bumming around:1st day

Hey guys, I was pretty busy during the past few days doing a lot of things – bumming around; to kill time and to feel, for at least once again, the busyness of life.

Day1: Mickey sent me a text message to meet up just to unwind from the hassle of boredom. We met up at Rob. Galle’ and we were dense on how to spend the whole day. We had an ice cream on cone plus a box of Marlboro blue lights (our fave for the moment) while thinking the best place to be. After few cigarette butts had flicked out, we decided to go to Mall of Asia. We took train and jeepney to get there and it was a very tedious ride. We immediately searched for a good place to salvage our starving tummies. The chase took about 30mins –weighing down the costs against the scarce resources. Italian resto was the first to be eliminated from our list – out of budget. Chinese was scratched out for we both don’t like eating with sticks. Mexican never occurred in our thoughts while Jap’s not a choice of our palate. We ended up to Kenny, affordable yet delectable. We both had a plate of healthy salad, chicken delicious-oh, mixed veggies, and grilled yummy burgers. Great burger – as always, delicious-oh, yum yum! After wolfing out the sumptuous meal, we decided to take a walk in the stretch of Bay Walk. We could not ever think of off the wall goofing around so we just had a sentimental reminiscing. How! How! the carabao!
How Borgee was so insecure with her life that even a simple criticism would definitely ignite her mood -it will definitely kill you! haroo!
How woody spent his whole school life scooting to a girl who just broke his heart and ended up to a sentimental blue during every drinking session - love hurts, it cuts like a knife, lol.
How Dan survived nursing field knowing he just shifted from engineering course and how he managed to give up the American life - flexibility in life.
How Johnnie got hook with demure, sophisticated, difficult Raffy. And how the world turned upside down wherein it was Raffy whose scooting Johnny - it's about jerjer, i guess.
How Elay became so insensitive and kind (or dumb) to her best friend’s evil plan of hooking with her boyfriend - the snake you feed is the same snake that will bite you because that's a snake, lol.
Hoy Jaime survived his life after flunking the school and the death of her mum - when going gets tough, the tough gets goin'.

School life – full of stories and it’s always nice to refresh the goodie memory.

Coffee Drinkers Have Slightly Lower Death Rates, Study Finds

Just wanna share with ya'a one goddiegood reason to stay HAPPY frappacapadoohdah addicts...

ScienceDaily (June 17, 2008) — A new study has good news for coffee drinkers: Regular coffee drinking (up to 6 cups per day) is not associated with increased deaths in either men or women. In fact, both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee consumption is associated with a somewhat smaller rate of death from heart disease.
"Coffee consumption has been linked to various beneficial and detrimental health effects, but data on its relation with death were lacking," says Esther Lopez-Garcia, PhD, the study's lead author. "Coffee consumption was not associated with a higher risk of mortality in middle-aged men and women. The possibility of a modest benefit of coffee consumption on heart disease, cancer, and other causes of death needs to be further investigated."
Women consuming two to three cups of caffeinated coffee per day had a 25 percent lower risk of death from heart disease during the follow-up period (which lasted from 1980 to 2004 and involved 84,214 women) as compared with non-consumers, and an 18 percent lower risk of death caused by something other than cancer or heart disease as compared with non-consumers during follow-up. For men, this level of consumption was associated with neither a higher nor a lower risk of death during the follow-up period (which lasted from 1986 to 2004 and involved 41,736 men).
The researchers analyzed data of 84,214 women who had participated in the Nurses' Health Study and 41,736 men who had participated in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. To be in the current study, participants had to have been free of cancer and heart disease at the start of those larger studies.
The study participants completed questionnaires every two to four years that included questions about how frequently they drank coffee, other diet habits, smoking, and health conditions. The researchers then compared the frequency of death from any cause, death due to heart disease, and death due to cancer among people with different coffee-drinking habits.
Among women, 2,368 deaths were due to heart disease, 5,011 were due to cancer, and 3,716 were due to another cause. Among men, 2,049 deaths were due to heart disease, 2,491 were due to cancer, and 2,348 were due to another cause.
While accounting for other risk factors, such as body size, smoking, diet, and specific diseases, the researchers found that people who drank more coffee were less likely to die during the follow-up period. This was mainly because of lower risk for heart disease deaths among coffee drinkers.
The researchers found no association between coffee drinking and cancer deaths. These relationships did not seem to be related to caffeine because people who drank decaffeinated coffee also had lower death rates than people who did not drink coffee.
The editors of Annals of Internal Medicine caution that the design of the study does not make it certain that coffee decreases the chances of dying sooner than expected. Something else about coffee drinkers might be protecting them. And some measurement error in the assessment of coffee consumption is inevitable because estimated consumption came from self-reports.
This study was supported by National Institutes of Health research grants.

stomach-turning fast food meals...

"You are what you eat" the popular maxim that was running thru my mind while I was crunching up the Greenwich foods.

It's an outraged counter when I first saw the TV ad of Greenwich about their pizza overload and now I am damn raw frustrated about their madness meals. It’s annoying that their meals look so delicious on TV ad but in reality, it's bad, bad, bad, lol...and it’s nauseating (with vomitus exploding)on how the TV ad tries to deceive our palates with colorful and digitally edited products.
It was just a month ago when I dumped my 100 bucks for Greenwich pizza parlor’s food. I was on a rush along the recto avenue when my tummy called for a break, there were only 120 pesos left on my wallet and I havn't had a meal yet so I looked up for a cheappy food chain that would satisfy my scanty budget. I landed on Greenwich esetan food chain outlet and I took the back/side door of the pizza parlor. Jeez, I was staggered looking at the dumped floor with filthy black greases in between the tiles ,haiz! but okay, I just calmed down and just assumed that that's the oldest food chain of Greenwich (lame). I took my order in a queue and went to the washroom to fix myself before choosing my table. Kablam! It was a filthy washroom with no soap, no tissue, and with a broken faucet. Therefore, if you would want to clean up yourself, you ought to go to the filthy restroom. Jeez!…Never mind, too gross to describe. I just looked for a table and waited for my food. I inferred that it’s a fast food chain but it took an epoch before I received my meal. A hundred peso meal (92 to be exact, lol), well fair enough, but the hell when I came up with my meal, it grossed me out. It was entirely different from the picture shown on the counter. The sides of the 6”x3” pizza were burnt and the toppings (and the think mozzarella) bared on the picture were lacking on the real pizzerita. The spaghetti was hopeless with unsavory sauce and the 3-tablespoon macaroni salad was dull and garish. And the most stomach-turning food was the fried chicken, it’s not well done and appeared to be the chicken from China infected with flu.
Lastly, I enjoyed watching the flies dancing on the table.

N.B. This isn’t an exaggeration. See it for yourself. I’ve been to SM Sta. Mesa Greenwich outlet too and the situation was the same.

Recipe 101

banana split: ingredients- banana, choco wafer stick, whip cream, honey, peanut butter, peanut crumbles, chocolate toppings. Quickie steps: make a split on the banana and stuff the peanut crumbles and choco toppings on it. Then polish it with peanut butter. Put the whip cream together with the honey and finally sprinkle the choco toppings on. Then place the choco wafer stick on each side of the banana. Chill and then serve. yum!
